Commercial Window Film: Security, Privacy or Solar Control?

How security film, privacy and decorative film and solar control film compare for offices and storefronts, with the pros, the limits and tips for choosing.

Window Film for Businesses: Security, Privacy or Solar?

Applying window film is one of the quickest ways to upgrade existing glass without replacing it. Still, the term covers very different products, so here is how to pick the right one.

Security and safety films

These thick, clear polyester films stick to the glass and keep the pieces together if it breaks. They slow down smash-and-grab break-ins and lower the risk of injury from flying shards.

  • Best for: storefronts, street-level offices, schools and pharmacies.
  • Tip: an attachment system that anchors the film to the frame boosts its performance.

Privacy and decorative films

Frosted, gradient, patterned and printed films block views but still let daylight in. They work well in meeting rooms, medical suites and glass office partitions, and they can carry your logo or brand graphics.

Solar control films

Spectrally selective and reflective films cut heat gain, glare and the UV rays that fade products and furniture, making hot south- and west-facing rooms more comfortable.

Anti-graffiti films

A clear sacrificial layer shields storefront glass from scratches and acid etching. After vandalism, you replace the film instead of the glass.

Before you install any film

  • Glass type: certain films are not advised on some insulated or heat-strengthened units due to thermal stress.
  • Warranty: make sure both the film and the glass warranties stay in effect.
  • Local rules: landlords and historic districts may limit reflective films.
