Five Warning Signs Your Commercial Door Closer Needs Service

A slamming door, leaking oil, a latch that will not catch: five signs a storefront door closer or pivot needs attention, and why early repairs cost less.

5 Signs Your Commercial Door Closer Needs Repair

In a busy shop or office lobby, door closers and pivots run through thousands of cycles every day. Once they begin to wear out, the entry turns into a safety, security and accessibility issue. Watch for these five warning signs.

1. The door slams

A slamming door means the closer has lost its hydraulic control or simply needs adjusting. Slams crack glass, pinch fingers and bend frames.

2. The door stops short of latching

When the door hangs open a few inches, the building is not secure and heated or cooled air leaks out. An adjustment usually solves it, but a worn pivot or a sagging door can also be to blame.

3. Oil is leaking from the closer

Oil on the closer body or on the floor tells you the internal seals have failed. A leaking closer cannot be fixed reliably and needs to be replaced.

4. The door drags or feels heavy

Dragging is usually caused by worn top or bottom pivots, loose hinges or a door that has dropped. A door that takes too much force to open may also fall short of ADA requirements.

5. Strange noises or a loose door

Grinding, clunking or a door that shifts side to side point to worn pivots, loose screws or damaged closer arms.

Why it pays to act early

A quick adjustment costs a fraction of replacing broken door glass or a bent frame, and routine service keeps your entry compliant and secure.
